Like the rest of the United Kingdom it is illegal to wild camp in Northern Ireland but there are some areas where it is more accepted than others.

If you follow the ‘rules’ of wild camping while in Northern Ireland then you shouldn’t have any major problems.

If it is possible then you should gain permission from the land owner. Much of the forest areas of the country are owned by the National Forestry Commission and it is strictly forbidden to wild camp here unless there are clearly designated signs.

Wild camping tips for Northern Ireland

  1. Read up on the area of Northern Ireland before you go. Knowing whether or not the wild camping stopover you have in mind has access for a motorhome is vital and will avoid disappointment
  2. Do not be tempted to have any fires while you’re are wild camping
  3. Do not pitch your motorhome near to where there are signs of wildlife habitation
  4. Do not leave litter or waste in the area where you have been, take it with you and dispose of it
  5. Do not park up near peoples’ homes or too close to the road

Popular places to wild camp in Northern Ireland

On the northern coast, Ballymoney, Greencastle and Doagh are popular places for wild camping with a motorhome. Annalong and Mount Stewart are east coast destinations that wild campers also enjoy.

Again, where possible you should check out the wild camping spots in Northern Ireland online to see if there is access for RVs.

Wild Camping Southern Ireland

Technically speaking, it is not legal to wild camp with your motorhome in Southern Ireland. However, there is a level of tolerance that operates in most areas of the country despite most of the land being owned by farmers.

One of the reasons for the popularity of wild camping in Eire or Southern Ireland is because there is not an abundance of campsites readily available as there are in other parts of the world.

Bogland and upland are the two main types of terrain in Southern Ireland and it is also common to camp in public land.

Why it’s good to wild camp in Southern Ireland

Apart from the unpredictable weather there are more reasons to wild camp in Southern Ireland than not. Here are some:

  1. Low crime rates
  2. No dangerous animals
  3. Outstanding scenery
  4. Not a densely populated country in general

Top tips for wild camping in Southern Ireland

  1. Be discreet if you do not have permission from the land owner. Use a tent that will blend in and not be a blot on the landscape that will get you easily noticed
  2. Wild camping with a motorhome is different to wild camping with a tent. You will be able to go ‘off the beaten track’ to a degree but remember you will have to manoeuvre your vehicle back onto the main roads after your spell in the wild. Avoid wild camping stopovers with narrow road access
  3. Like all other areas where you may wild camp, do not light fires or pitch up too close to any dwellings or cattle/livestock
  4. Make sure your recyclables and rubbish are disposed of in an environmentally sound way
  5. Pitch up your motorhome as late as possible and be gone by morning
  6. There are midges (blood sucking flies) present in Ireland so be careful to avoid those places if possible. If it isn’t then it is advisable to take a mosquito net
  7. Steer clear of lowland areas where it can rain a lot
  8. Trespassing is not a criminal offence in Ireland but it could become a criminal issue if you do not leave when asked

Killarney, West Cork and Kilkenny offer some great wild camping stopovers as well as the Wicklow Mountains.

Dursey Island, Kilmore Quay and Roundstone are some of the motorhome wild camping stopovers listed in Southern Ireland.

Motorhome Driving In The UK Capital And Low Emissions

The LEZ came into effect in 2008 and the idea behind it was to stop larger diesel-thirsty vehicles going through the capital and creating emission fumes.

Travelworld Motorhomes looks driving a motorhome in the London low emission zone
view our stock of American Rvs, campervans and European motorhomes for sale

As well as the positive impact of lowering emissions in the capital, the LEZ has also had its critics: mainly those who use large commercial vehicles within or around the city. It has also created a few hurdles for motorhome owners.

The Low Emission Zone is largely confined to the inside of the M25, anything on the periphery, you will not get charged for. If you want more details you can check your vehicle online at www.tfl.gov.uk/lezlondon.

London is not the only European city to use this system of emission control. Cities in Germany and Holland also employ a Low Emission Zone policy.

Does my motorhome comply with the LEZ rules?

As well as diesel motorhomes (petrol engines are excluded), coaches, buses and larger commercial vehicles are subject to the Low Emission Zone rules.

As of January 2012 diesel motorhomes registered before 2002, were brought into the LEZ rules – previously it had been mainly commercial vehicles. Those engines also not deemed fit to comply with Euro III emissions level are those above 3.5 tonnes GVW and with a registration date of before 1 October 2006

Some campervans which are below 2.5 tonnes are exempt from the charges.

Low Emission Zone Fines

The daily charge for entering the LEZ is £200 and fines go up to £500 if you fail to pay in advance.

No matter what type of vehicle you are driving, if you do not pay the charge then you will be traced by one of a series of cameras dotted around the zone. The cameras will use your registration to locate your details and you will receive a letter warning you if this is your first time. Penalties are charged at £500 or £250 if you pay within two weeks.

What are my options if my motorhome doesn’t comply with the LEZ rules?

  1. Non-payment of the charge is not an option as you will be traced as indicated above
  2. You can fit a new engine that is compliant with the zone rules but you must make sure that that the DVLA know if you want to stop paying LEZ charges
  3. Having a diesel particulate filter fitted is one route but it is best to get a professional to do this. The job can cost around £3k plus annual servicing costs

Scottish Wild Camping Explored

Wild camping in Scotland is enjoyed by a profusion of motorhome owners every year.

Scotland has become well known for welcoming people into its striking and open countryside with a great deal of freedom. If you are considering wild camping with your motorhome in Scotland then there are a few things worth remembering:

Scottish Outdoor Code

The Scottish Outdoor Code came into effect in February 2005 and is a set of rules which exists under the Land Reform Act 2003. The code requires that all individuals exploring the countryside in Scotland should be responsible for themselves.

The rules apply to those taking part in horse riding, wild camping, canoeing and mountain biking. We would advise taking a look at the code before you go wild camping in Scotland.

What to remember when wild camping in Scotland

You can camp almost anywhere in Scotland but it is important to take note of the following to ensure you are acting in accordance with the rules.

  • Maintain respect for people living close and for animals or livestock kept in grounds close by
  • If you have pets you should keep them under control
  • Do not leave litter or waste when you leave
  • Be respectful of wildlife
  • Don’t outstay your welcome – leave early
  • Do not have camp fires

In return, those in charge of maintaining and managing the outdoors should also respect the access rights of campers and appreciate that they have rights of way access.

The relationship between land managers and wild campers is particularly important when deer stalking season commences. Alternative access should be made available by land owners.

There are some exceptions which include parts of the Loch Lomands National Park following anti-social behaviour involving litter and alcohol.

Wild camping tips

If you like the idea of wild camping in Scotland then here are a few simple, practical tips to ensure an enjoyable trip:

  • Spring and summer seasons in Scotland are the best. Weather can be unpredictable so make sure you have a Plan B if the weather turns
  • The Murray Coast and other areas in the Scottish Highlands are popular destinations for wild campers
  • Try to find somewhere where there is lots of things to do close by, especially if you have children
  • Like all good campers you should have a map with you and plan of what you want to do
  • If you fancy somewhere remote then remember to be practical and take with you necessary items like food and warm clothes
  • Camp on high ground and stay discreet
  • When finding an area to go to the toilet choose somewhere sheltered close to water and near other camping areas. Dig a hole and place sand or soil back over once used and don’t leave toilet roll there, discard this with the rest of your rubbish

Motorhome Wheels And The Effects of Winter

It’s likely that your motorhome’s wheels experienced the same winter of discontent as we all did last winter.

What did Winter do to your wheels - the effects of Winter on Motorhome tyres from Travelworld Motorhomes
view our stock of American Rvs, campervans and European motorhomes for sale

At this time of year, it’s understandable to want to forget the poor weather of last season but don’t be too hasty in pulling back the covers on your motorhome just yet. There are some important checks to make on your tyres before you begin any trips.

Top tips for tyre safety this spring

  1. Look out for winter wear on your tyres after being in storage. This kind of damage is often presented as cracking in the rubber or prior to cracking there could be faded grey areas on your tyres. It is important to check all tyres including the spare as this could result in a blow out on the road
  2. As you will know, tyre pressures should be checked periodically anyway. One of the important times to check is before you hit the road again after winter storage. Don’t incorrectly assume that the pressure will remain the same as when you stored it away; leaking can take place over winter
  3. If your tyres are not at the right pressure when you begin a journey then handling can be negatively affected and this can result in accidents on the road
  4. Do not check tyre pressures when they are warm as this could give you an incorrect reading
  5. Tyres treads are governed by law in terms of the measurements there must be existing within your tyres. They must be at least 1.6 mm in depth
  6. The gaps in between tyre treads can create a space which is capable of picking up unwanted objects on the road. Such objects could be bits of glass, large stones or anything else that fits in the space. Check your tyres to make sure none of these objects have pierced a hole. Get your tyres inflated and wait 24 hours to see if there has been any deflation
  7. The fifth wheel of your motorhome ( i.e. the spare tyre) will also need to be included in all of the above checks so don’t forget to include this in all your inspections

If you are uncertain of any damage which has happened to your tyres we recommend that you take your motorhome to a specialised motorhome dealer with an aftersales service. This will ensure that your tyres are ready to be used at the highest possible safety standards.

Spring Preparations For Your Motorhome

It looks like the bad weather will be gone for a few months at least and most RV-ers are looking forward to getting behind the wheel again for some sunny excursions.

Getting your motorhome ready for Spring - from Travelworld Motorhomes
view our stock of American Rvs, campervans and European motorhomes for sale

However, the cold winter will have had an impact on your motorhome while it has been in storage so it is important to make some routine checks before you go anywhere. Here are some tips before you take to the road.

  1. Firstly, don’t leave it too late. Have a thorough inspection of your motorhome inside and out. If there is anything needing attention from a mechanic book it in as soon as you can. Leaving just a short time before could mean you find repair jobs that will take a few days to get sorted. Also, there could be a longer waiting time as many other motorhome owners are doing the same thing at this time of year
  2. Many motorhome dealers offer a spring check service that will get your RV in top shape and give you peace of mind before setting off
  3. Your own inspections should involve checking tyres for wear; checking wheels for corrosion; looking to see if there has been any leaks internally e.g. checking to see if there are any marks or damp patches in or on the furniture inside. Also check for fuel leaks on the floor underneath your RV
  4. Look through your manual to see if there are any required actions to take after storing your motorhome. This will include guidance on oil and filter changes. If in doubt, and you think you oil needs changing then it is a good idea to do so
  5. It is recommended that LPG inspections are carried out annually and at the start of the season by a qualified motorhome specialist
  6. Have a look at all your fluid connections including connections to waste and fresh water tanks. Test them out to make sure they are still in working order
  7. Sanitize the fresh water system by filling the tank and draining it a few times. There should be no water in the system if you have correctly winterized your motorhome, if not, then there could be an offensive smell. Flushing the system will get rid of this
  8. Infestations of mice and inspects can often occur over the winter months. Have a look in all cupboards, refrigerator vents and small spaces for signs of habitation
  9. Let some air inside. Even if there has been no sign of damp or mildew it’s likely there will be a slight fusty aroma. Vacuum all the carpets and soft furnishings.
  10. Replenish your stock. This will include: cleaning and cooking products and kitchen utensils
  11. If you have a trailer then it is a good time to repack the bearings. Over winter the grease can drift away from the bearing and create a dry spot which in turn can lead to damage
  12. If you left our battery charging or left it insitu over winter now is a good time to have a look and see that all is well. You should also check that all your other battery operated mechanisms are working including lights and signals
  13. Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors need to be tested as well as fire extinguishers

Inverness Man Removes Highlands ‘No Parking Overnight’ Signs

A man from Inverness has taken down ‘unwelcoming’ layby signs asking visitors not to park overnight.

Rebellious traveller paves way for motorhomes in Highlands - Latest Motorhome News from Travelworld Motorhomes
view our stock of American Rvs, campervans and European motorhomes for sale

Andy Strangeway believed that the signs were putting off motorhome owners from going to the region. However, there has been no argument from local campsites who it was feared could lose out if the non-stopover signs were removed.

John McDonald from Bugh Caravan Park has refuted claims it will impact his business. He said that there was never really any notice given to the signs anyway and that most visitors enjoyed being able to ‘hook up’ to the services his park offers.

Manager of the Lovat Bridge Campsite, Graham Lowder concurred with Mr McDonald and added that holidaymakers like the security of a campsite.

European sites are more motorhome friendly

Mr Strangeway who actively led the campaign has previously enjoyed the limelight before with his record breaking travel attempt of sleeping on 162 Scottish Islands.

He claims that European sites are much more oriented to the needs of motorhome owners and has been campaigning to make the Highlands more amenable for motorhomers.

Part of his crusade has been to encourage more ‘stopover’ laybys so travellers can take a rest. Councillors in the area had wanted to keep the signs as they felt that stopovers would take away from the local campsites and the lack of facilities could also have a negative effect.

However, the council were informed that if they tried to take the case to court to reinstate the signs then they would not be successful.

Mr Strangeway says that he knew of a lot of people who were avoiding the Highlands because of the signs backed by the council and that there had been a furore on social media websites about the issue.

New Figures Reveal Boom of Motorhome Holiday In Britain

New figures from the National Caravan and Camping Club have revealed that the lure of the motorhome holiday is experiencing a boom with Brits.

Motorhome holidays feature in Britains popular staycations - Latest Motorhome News from Travelworld Motorhomes
view our stock of American Rvs, campervans and European motorhomes for sale

Families, couples and young people are all interpreting their own form of camping from ‘glamping’, economical family holidays and weekend breaks for couples.

Surprisingly weather does not seem to play a large role in whether or not families decide to go on a camping trip. The ability and financial advantages of being able to borrow equipment; the capacity to be close to nature and wild life; outdoor activities and being close to home all contribute to the choice to take a ‘staycation’.

The camping industry is now responsible for contributing £6m to the UK economy. The rise in popularity in camping in either a caravan or a motorhome has meant there has been many bonuses to the industry as a whole. One advantage has been the surge in interest from students wishing to study tourism park management

The statistics disclosed in the NCC report showed that there are approximately 1.5 million people who take their motorhomes and caravans on holiday every year and that there has been a 14% rise in advanced bookings.

An NCC spokesperson said that the sector had seen a significant rise in people holidaying abroad. Brits wanting a more economical holiday have made growth in the industry possible and the trend of glamping has also added to the popularity.

Pensioner From Wales Asks For Stolen Motorhome Return

A 68 year old pensioner from Wales has asked that thieves who stole his motorhome from the drive of his home in Cardiff return his white Ford mobile home.

Heartbroken Motorhome Owner Pleas For His Baby Back - Latest Motorhome News from Travelworld Motorhomes

Robert Pye has terminal cancer and a range of disabilities that see him struggle to walk and get around in general. Mr Pye’s motorhome was his lifeline and something that gave him a lot of pleasure. So much so that the former businessman, who lost his wealth in the 1980s after his company went under, has invested over £7,000 in refurbishments inside the motorhome.

Mr Pye was in tears when he was interviewed by Walesonline and described his loss to that of losing a child. The father of 11 has nothing only his pension to live on but he used to enjoy fishing trips in Pembrokeshire with his cherished motorhome.

The motorhome enthusiast has been left with the predicament of not being able to claim on his insurance as he will lose his no claims bonus and have to pay almost the equivalent in a cheap run around car he is hoping to buy.

This is not the first time Mr Pye has been the victim of theft; he also says he has been burgled five times in the last two years. He added that his neighbour had heard the criminals on this occasion but assumed that Mr Pye was setting off early for one of his fishing excursions.

He said that he his motorhome wasn’t just a ‘van. He added: “You might think of it as just a motor home but to me it is my only way of getting out.”

So far there has been no sightings of the motorhome despite door-to-door enquiries by Community Support Officers in the area.
