Transcripts from the RV Video FAQ section

Information on Travelworld RV.

Travelworld have been in business for about 30 years and are one of the larges importers of American RVs in the UK.  They are the main agent for 6 of the main manufacturers and have a new showroom in Telford with around 35 new vehicles in stock.

What is an RV (Recreational Vehicle)?

RV stands for recreational vehicle and it is a term used in the United States.  It tends not be used by English or European dealers and is used by Travelworld to differentiate from other suppliers who don't have our expertise..

When were RVs first produced in the US?

They started in the mid 1950’s and are now well established in the USA.

How long have RVs been imported?

They started being imported into the UK during the 1970’s and are now fairly readily available with a large choice of vehicles and options.

How many brands are there in the UK?

There are legal restrictions on imports due to the dimensions, however, there are around 12 manufacturers represented in the UK.  Travelworld have 6, 3 of which are from the same manufacturer using different brands.

How has the RV market changed?

The market has been in existence for around 30 years.  The customer base is very varied and is anything from professional motor sportsmen to families.

What are the differences between European and American RVs?

The main difference is the size.  American RVs tend to be built with aluminium and fibreglass, whilst European ones are based on wood.  On the US built ones, the chassis and engines tend to be more heavy duty for longer term use.

What are the different classes?

US manufacturers devised 3 or 4 classes of models.

  • The A class is the biggest; they have an all in one body and are pushers or pullers.
  • The B class is a smaller version of an RV, similar to a campervan.
  • The B+ class is a variant of the B class, it is coach built, has a curved sidewall body complete with pull outs.
  • The C class is a coach built motor home built on a van chassis and has a bed over the cab.

What’s biggest the difference in the A class models?

The main difference is in the engine.  There is the choice of a pusher or a puller.  A pusher is at the higher end of the market as they have a better quality engine and chassis.  The engine is in the rear, hence the term pusher and they are built for long term use. A puller is more an entry level model, with it’s engine fitted at the front.  It is still a high quality vehicle.
